A tale of two halves

Those who know me and follow me on Twitter will know that I’ve recently started riding my bike again. It’s a bright orange Trek 6500 that I bought 4 years ago – a model that is very well equipped with quality Shimano components and a ‘Super Light Racing’ aluminium frame. Admittedly the garish colour wasn’t my first choice, but I’ve always liked Trek bikes and it was heavily discounted as a previous seasons model when I bought it. Despite being well geared up for it (literally) it’s never seen any serious off-road use – much like I suspect most ‘mountain’ bikes I pass on the cycleways and footpaths. I’m a loser…

For as long as I can remember I’ve been overweight, suffered from migraines, lacked self-confidence and been quite unfit. Last October I tipped the scales at 250lbs, and decided that for someone who is 5’10” that was far too big a number. Something had to change, but with work and play mostly involving sitting on my back side in front of a computer, and me really rather enjoying my food, what was I supposed to do? Bah, humbug!

Sometimes we forget the true meaning of Christmas. Turn on the television, and it’s impossible to escape the barrage of advertisements for the latest re-gurgitation of previously released material on DVD, over-priced exotic smelly water, celebrity biographies and cookbooks, gadgets, gizmos, games and garments. Let’s not forget food and drink either, and the somewhat ominous re-running of adverts that I’m sure I remember seeing years ago – budgets tight this year perhaps? And don’t even get me started on toys – a toy dog that actually urinates? Please (and I mean “no thanks”). Continue reading Bah, humbug!
